The Quiet Chaos of Growing Up Different
Ever since long forgotten time in school, never fitting was simply awful. It was only with lots of mind work that I started making peace with my differences. that's not just a personal reflection. It's a common starting point for many people who now identify as neurodivergent. We're talking about Adhd, Autism spectrum, OCD, and more. Brains that just work differently.

This isn't about being broken. It's about realizing that neurodivergence doesn't need fixing. It needs understanding.
What Even Is Neurodivergent?
Neurodivergence refers to a a range of cognitive and neurological differences, including autism, Adhd, dyslexia and others, that deviate from what's typically considered 'normal'. According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 15-20% of the global population exhibits some form of neurodivergence.
Yet, the label itself is both liberating and limiting. "it aint much but we're doing honest work trying to keep up," said by one neurodivergent creator. There's pride, sure. But also the exhaustion of constantly navigating a world that was never built for you.
Diagnosis or Digital Diagnosis?
I haven't had a diagnosis, but just hanging with the Resident Medical Officer at Alpha Healing Center, my test scales pointed off the charts for chronic depression and anxiety which was fun.
This essentially reflects a broader trend: Many Gen Z and young adults are exploring mental health labels via online assessments or Therapy tok, often without formal clinical validation. Lyra Health calls this a 'misdiagnosis epidemic,' particularly when mental health becomes a content aesthetic.
Check your sources, kids. Just because it's digital doesn't mean it isn't propaganda
The Rise in self diagnosis can be empowering, but also risky. A 2022 study from the Journal of Medical internet research warned about the psychological consequence of incorrect self labeling, especially when social media algorithms reinforce a specific identity tropes.
Relatability Vs. Reality
The sudden rush of relatable content online,"You're neurodivergent!" videos with claiming lofi beats, can feel validating. The relatability? oh damn, on point.
But over simplification dilutes the truth. As a previous piece explored: It deceives you into thinking healing is pretty."and the aestheticization of neurodivergence often leads to performative representation that erases real struggle.
"Healing or Performance? is not just a catchy title. It's a cultural dilemma, are we living our truth, or curating it for likes?
Representation In Media: From 'The Breakfast Club" to Gen Z Reels
I mean ever seen 3 Idiots? Taare Zameen Par? The Breakfast Club? These are just named top of the head. Each of those films, across cultures and decades, centered a neurodivergent character. But they often did so through a neurotypical lens. Today, creators like Hannah Gadsby, Sia and even streamers like Valkyrae, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, Ludwig are bringing newer, more personal takes into mainstream consciousness.
Neurodivergent pride isn't about being better or worse. Its about working differnetly, but in a capitalist framework, productivity is king. The system rewards what gets work done. And if your brain needs more breaks, different tools, or non linear thinking? you get labeled as inefficient, lazy or disruptive.
In fact, a 2021 study published by Harvard Business Review found that neurodivergent individuals are 30% more likely to face unemployment, despite often possessing unique strengths in problem solving and innovation.
And yet.. still we're thriving.
Institutions Are Evolving, Slowly, But Surely
Places like Alpha Healing Center have started recognizing neurodivergence not as pathology, but as potential. With Expressive arts, Rtms therapy, and clinical neurofeedback, Alpha Healing Center blends holistic well being with clinical excellence.
“Clients at Alpha Healing Center sure think it’s never hurt getting a diagnosis,” one contributor said. The important part? Getting the right one and using it as a tool, not a prison sentence.
Neurodivergence ≠ Brokenness
Many neurodivergent individuals are misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression because they’ve adapted to mask their core traits. This often leads to chronic burnout. Cleveland Clinic confirms that “high functioning depression” is dangerously overlooked, especially in women and marginalized communities.
The typicals can't comprehend, and I can't imagine that sort of freedom from your own mind. And that's okay. To be neurodivergent is not to suffer, its to experience. Differently. Intensely. With pattern seeking thoughts and spirals of sensations.
How To Button This?
Stop asking us to fix ourselves. Stop designing school systems, office spaces and digital platforms around one kind of brian. start listening. start co creating. Because none of this is about who is normal. Its about acknowledging difference without demanding assimilation.
Being neurodivergent in this world is tough but it’s also a superpower in the right settings.
Whether or not you’ve got a diagnosis, a community, or even language to describe your brain yet you matter.
“Don’t worry, work at your own pace. It’s not a race worth winning.”
Let’s keep asking more questions. Let’s keep refusing shame. Let’s keep being different loudly.
